I agree with dcolbert's assessment here, and add: If device quality / function was so important for consumers, the iPad itself wouldn't sell as well as it does. Consumers are in a "buy shiny" trend these days as opposed to "buy better".This limited yet well constructed device offers less features (and definitely less flexibility, being tied into the Apple/iTune Garden) than the majority of the current and upcoming devices sporting a Google OS.

Richard, Keep in mind that among tech writers, we're still making a lot of guesses where the tablet market will go and what will succeed. Android has some significant obstacles, but so does iOS - and there are still other players waiting in the wings for a mis-step on either of these two leaders. Ultimately, the *numbers* are going to determine the best place to push your content. Early Macs may have arguably been more consumer friendly PC experiences, but the sheer number of Windows PCs out there meant that if you wanted to reach the largest number of content consumers as a content publisher, you favored the Win PC platform. It becomes a cycle. People bought Windows PCs because there was more content. Because there was more people with Windows PCs, people developed more content for Windows PC. Wash, rinse, repeat. There is every indication that the installed user base of Android devices is going to be huge, even in the face of the relatively impressive number of iOS devices already out there. It'll take a lot more than some awkward early starts on Android tablets from cheap Chinese importers to derail this.

You do not need a surfeit of high end android tablets to make it a success; A few decent ones from major vendors along with one or two "whiz-bang" tablets will certainly be good. I know of one, that matches what you wanted when you said:"Android tablets offering dual core processors, a new whiz-bang version of Android featuring a slick tablet interface".It the Adam, from Notion Ink, which should be a major show case product at the CES. Seeing the buzz it is already creating, I do not understand why you did not mention it here.
