You make a good economic arguments on the reasons of this state of affairs. Economic reasons are based on demand and consumer demand is obviously driven by movies. Therefore, we are stuck with movie format screens and resolutions. Hmmm...

However, your argument that we're 'supposed' to print stills is totally preposterous. History proves that most published images started as transparencies, which were viewed ON SCREEN, at full resolution, prior to publication. The fact is that images viewed on screen are vastly superior in luminosity, dynamic range and fidelity and much, much closer to what the eye sees than the feeble reproduction on dead trees. The print is a relic from yesteryear and a medium best suited for artist endeavours, not for realistic representation of reality.
