I heard SharePoint is Microsoft's fastest growing business software, so you'd think SharePoint admins and/or developers would be listed, but it's probably too specific.

Why the reference to jobs hired through 2016? Did I stumble into a time warp??

I do feel sorry for people pursuing degrees in IT. The demand isn't there, there are few opportunities to advance, everybody wants x number of years' worth of experience (even for products that aren't out yet or haven't been out for a time longer than the x number of years being asked for)... and , of course, the students are the ones who end up paying for it all. Seems a tad unfair... Until there is a sign that our ROI is a reality, investing in IT just seems to be the ultimate fools' errand.

You reminded me of a call I got from a recruiter. She asked me how many years of experience I have on Windows 2008 server systems, which I answered 3 years. And her response was "Oh, we are looking for a senior guy with minimum 10 years experience in win2k8 systems".
I said Thanks and wished her all the best for her search and hang up the line.

Funny how they are looking for someone with 10yrs experience in Win2K8 Server when the actual software has only been around for 3yrs and change.. Hmmmm I think she must be looking for a time traveler instead... How can you possibly have 10yrs experience in this software when it's only been out for a little over 3? Recruiters are funny...

I have been dealing with them for 34 years (no time warp here). The majority of them resally just want to close a deal to make up their salary. They have little idea of what they are trying to fill person wise, and so apply generalisations. Yes I am guilty myself of this. I have worked with a single recruiter all my working life, he to me is like gold dust (no I cannot name him for obvious reasons). Once you find one that can add up, knows product lifecycles, and thus 2008 is 3 years old etc, stick with that person forever!

Otherwise you end up with a saleman, who doesnt understand IT, but trys to persuade otherwise.

so if anybody has 20 years experience of Windows 2014 let me know, I have a vacancy to fill.

Turn yourself from the negatively discriminated minority into a positively discriminated majority or minority. If you understand what I mean.
Or move to a country where your jobs are being outsourced - it is not just North Korea.

Right now the national occupation projections done by BLS http://data.bls.gov/oep/nioem?Action=empios&Type=Occupation are available and might be a better indicator on long term job openings compared to the tight hiring market we see today. It is difficult to say where the fallout of the current recession will leave the IT field in the future.

average salary mentioned for SE is really very high here I don't see people getting that much money leave apart taxes needs to be paid.

I've had that title just for development, jobs where I've actually engineered software where there wasn't a mention of it.

If you want a career in software, first thing to do is ignore what any HR numpty type says, writes, thinks or believes.

Do what you are asked for when it's asked for as well as you are allowed, all else is ego inflation.

Its very good to know that IT careers will be around for a long time. I like these two careers on here also, but keep in mind there are many other careers in IT you can take on too with no problem of them diminishing over time

In what countries does this apply? Here in mine, a fresh graduate's average salary is only around $ 5,600, while the senior one (2-5 years) could perhaps get $ 10,000. That's still more than 8 times lower than your statement.

Honestly I think this career is over flooded especially by young graduates and therefore it's no longer a fast growing career. The salary average given is also more than ten times than actual salary. Please don't take statistics from a single place and give them as an average

before showing these statistics, you'd better add the country, region of these titles.

What you see locally isn't representative of the entire industry. I travel for a large O/S company, and I see development shops all around the country. I walk into a large hotel chain, and out of a floor with 200 people, 125 are from India, several from other countries. I happen to know that their pimp is being paid $60-$80/hour for them, and they're probably getting 30-60 of that. I see the demand for resources first-hand, and I think it's sad that our kids aren't planning to fill those positions. Yes, the demand is great, and many need to learn how to sell themselves into this market.

I've lived in the Dallas-Fort Worth area for over 30 years and have never been out of a job, even in these tough times. Mobile Technology. I know Computer Software Engineer was mentioned but look at the number of apps (free & paid) that are available in Droid & iPhone store. With the infusion of various tablets, Droid OS being on many phones & tablets, I believe that the list needs to include Mobile Technology coders & technicians explicitly. Just my 2 cents.....

I am 100% agree with both industry. I think designing and data analysis are really big job for any business. Because, it turns in to business success. I have concern with internet marketing. There are many internet marketing guys and strategy makers are rocking. I have very less ideas about it. Can you give me more ideas about it? Because, I have mind bubbles regarding it. What is future of strategy makers who are base to make success on internet.
