I've attended a 1 day long UI course from UIE.COM. Well worth it. They also do a yearly conference. Online courses also at

Usability should factor into every aspect of design, roll-out, implementation, training, troubleshooting, and maintenance. If it does not, it can lead to a situation where the solution is worse than the alternative, and obviously more costly.

When it comes to evaluating the merit of a project, the average customer doesn't look at how elegant the code is or even how fault tolerant the network infrastructure is. The key factors they look at is usability and cost. To sell a solution, we need to be able to present and deliver based upon those metrics, using the technology we all love to back these up, not the other way around.
