I've done what he does
And frankly, I found it quite rewarding in many ways. Was there stress? Sure. Did some users dump on us because they were angry at a problem we didn't cause. Yup. At the same time, there was a real sense of accomplishment day in and day out. I could solve any number of issues and see each one as a victory, and take pleasure in the fact that I got someone back up and running again.

Like I said... I've worked in other industries, I've don't other jobs. The problems described in the original article are, for the most part, universal to working for someone else or having clients, or otherwise being accountable to another person.

Every HR person I've known, by the way, was very stressed. It's not an easy job in the slightest... just having to deal with the millions of rules and laws is a headache, you need to be half lawyer to do it. Try figuring out the rules on I-9, a simple form, for example... there's dozens of pages of regulations underlying that one page form. I know, I spent ages sitting down with HR to implement it as an application. I respect HR people greatly having worked closely with them.
