I was able after 15 years in my IT career to move to the client side as a manager in charge of IT investments and development, this has many advantages, first the client just worries about bringing the problems to my table and I design a solution, do the IT consultant selection work and PM the project. This has the added advantage that the consultants are not that frustrated since I take care of pushing fair offers / deadlines / payments and usually I agree on what can realistically be delivered.
For me it takes me away from the long hours and a bit of stress from "pure" IT. so far it has worked fine!
