One of the problems seems to be...
... that the Go docs explain things in terms of C. Experienced C programmers find that comforting -- everybody else not so much. Back in my early days of C programming, I had to think of C in terms of assembler. The fact that all these languages deal in pointers creates a conceptual hurdle that you have to get over before they make sense.

It's not that big a hurdle, really -- it just seems big when you haven't gotten over it yet.
