Last time I checked, - there were no plans to launch a Linux/Unix pad in the near future, which just leaves whatever the minds at Google come up with (and apparently, they didn't think iPad was going to sell 15 million in 9 months). If my choices are an iPad that "may" run different apps on the Verizon network and be locked down ont he AT&T network - then that's no different than Apple. Droid is going through this same phase and having issues with backwards compat as well - something Apple has happily taken care of.
Also, Jason, you compare what the iPad can or can't do regarding computing - I'm not sure of what it cannot at this point, except perhaps run MS Office - which GoogleApps happliy does on this device quite nicely. Along with the right mix of apps on board, it blows away anything on the shelf (yes, including those Samsung tablets still gatering dust). Oh and e-Books, are selling like hotcakes on the Apple site - and they've just surpassed their 2500th publisher to come on board and produce books with Apple (Amazon hasn't even done this). BTW - the iPad is better than the Nook, Koob and others who use color - and is a better interface than the Kindle, with that clumsy keyboard.

Welcome to the game changer and those who keep panting that it's not a PC simply don't get it
