I think your use of the term "consultant" in this article is a stretch. Most of the daily work you are describing seems to fall under what I would call contract work. The difference for me being the duration of the work and the complexity of the problem. Contract work to me is minor league because it doesn't really require any depth of understanding of the business. Its major league work to overcome business complexity. What you are describing is more like pinch hitting and that type of work will eventually be farmed out to the cheapest bidders/players brought up from the minors to perform specific functions.
