I still hold to that feeling that I think within about 3 or 4 years that will happen (a true computer)....maybe not a commonplace, but then again, only 15 years ago, cellphone were only for those who could afford them.....now everyone has them!

http://www.techrepublic.com/forum/discussions/102-343360-3438543

... is thinking this way too. Right now they have separate PC, tablet, and phone. But the real key to a single device is making is a real single device. If I switch OS environments from phone to tablet to desktop, what's the point of using one device. I think Motorola fails here by introducing some limited environment in their dock, when Android already does the job. HP is noot just putting WebOS on phone and tablet, but on desktop PCs. As many transition from being desktop-centric to phone-computer centric, this sounds exactly like what many users will want. The only magic in Windows is that it has the apps you need. But this is changing faster than ever before in history, simply because mobile devices have passed a threshold: good wireless networking, more performance than desktops of not all that long ago, and good OS underpinnings (GNU/Linux or BSD/Mach). The PC became more than what most people actually need in a computing device over 10 years ago. Niches stil need the performance, but not everyone. Pocket devices are now approaching that same level of useful performance, but with better battery life, portability, and user interfaces.

What gets lost in this is that each device needs to each offer a unique experience based on context. I don't want a PC experience on my phone and I don't what a phone experience on my tablet. I also want a full-featured PC experience when I'm at my desk. I do see these Context Computing devices (smartphone/tablet/PC) replacing low-end PCs and netbooks.

I am a Network Operations Manager. I began using the HP Slate 500 tablet in October 2010. It does everything mentioned above. It runs WIN 7 Professional and the full blown Office suite. For the phone, I installed a softphone, but of course can use Skype or any other product and I frequently do for video conferencing. The slate is small, fast, and very light. It is like carrying a 10-1/2 inch diagonal notepad. Actually, many people think I actually have a leather-bound notepad and are shocked when they see the Slate perform. I use Win 7 because we are a Microsoft shop. When docked, I use a BT keyboard and mouse. Undocked, the touchscreen, which also takes pen input, more than suffices. I do not miss my laptop or phone even a little bit. The nonsense about the MS tablet functions being poor is just that...nonsense. The slate is a for-real professional tool for types who are constantly on the go. Programmers and such will always want more real estate screen-wise, but for my particular duties, the Slate has me covered. Thank you for another good TR article.

this vision will be insane to watch. best vision article of recent. Economically we will spend a fraction on technology that we are required today (personnally and business), upgrading components of the total process, with efficiencies that will drive many other prices down in the consumer world. Plus the time we will save not screwing around with this Tech mess will be great too.All it takes is a leader to truly eat its young (big if). Common Dell or someone today like Dell used to be, get this ball really rolling. I will buy your shares and short the others, as the effect will be just a crushing to the bloated ones. I am not sure I believe it will be MS but hey this article should scare everyone, software and hardware alike. Google may look to be in even a better position after this goes down, so they too should be funding this vision for their own prosperity.
