Windows 7 offered support for all of the new 64 bit processors and the memory they can address. That made it a compelling upgrade for anyone struggling to get anything done in a 32 bit 3.5 GB environment. The UI changes are a mixed bag and they are the reason that a lot of people haven't moved forward. I agree that a viable mobile offering is needed from M$ though.
