While I can agree with some technical aspects of the user comments, I agree more with Vincent and the reasonable approach described here. In our critical systems we often mirror drives (RAID 1) with a hot-spare; you get the best redundancy and up-time while performance is reasonable. In systems that require higher performance we'll change to RAID 5+HS but increase the backup frequency; currently we produce 1 full backup daily on a 16 week retention schedule, de-duplicated then replicated offsite overnight. While its true that "RAID is not a backup solution." it is an operability solution and should always be factored as such. The I stands for "Inexpensive" - buy more disks, but use them appropriately.
