How about real physical indicators, such as drill a hole in the case at a specific location, hot brand the case, a Red dummy plug in the video port, a heavy duty zip tie thru the case lock tab. The idea is that anybody can tell it's cleared, even if it's not in the right storage room. First thoughts I'm sure there are better ideas out there.
