Lots of heat, little light...
Most college-educated people aren't "educated" at all -- they've been trained in the details of a specific area of study, whether it's history, music, archaeology, or engineering, not unlike a circus monkey. They have gained no broad insight into "life, the universe, and everything" -- mostly because they had no interest in such matters in the first place.

Given that technical people (of which I am one) tend to be appallingly lunk-headed -- even about matters within their own purview -- it's not surprising thie discussion has been 95% heat, 5% light. The worst part of it has been (as someone else pointed out) comments of the "I don't like it, so it's no good" school of "thinking".

It is frightening that the software we purchase and the complex systems we depend on for communication, banking, etc, are designed by the foggy-thinking dummies who post in groups such as this one.
