P.E.B.K.A.C & ID10T Error
Ahhhhh the users,....without the hoards of clueless users, none of us would have the jobs that we do. Countless times the problem is usually PEBKAC (Problem Exists Between Keyboard And Chair) or it's and ID10T error, which as you can plainly see is usually best expressed by spelling it out instead of writing it down. As a former field engineer for Dell, Compaq, AST, Toshiba, and Alpha Micro, I've seen many things that would make you puke up your lunch and just plain make you want to drive over a cliff. We've all heard the stories of the Grandma using the mouse as a sewing machine pedal, or the woman who while attempting to fax a document was holding the paper to the monitor while clicking the fax button. These are the people in your neighborhood. You drive next to them on the freeway, and have probablly bumped into them at the supermarket. From the insanely wierd, and excentric users that are paranoid that their porn collection will get them thrown in jail, to the absolutely useless person who should never even been allowed to buy a computer, we all have had our share of them. All of which have helped me gain a better understanding into both myself, and how I can address problems from every level. Sometimes these issues are annoying, dangerous, dirty, and just downright wrong, but none of them have ever hurt me other than mental scars. From cat hair filled systems, to roaches, coins in the floppy drive, PB&J in the CD-ROM drives, and much much worse, the things that end users do to drive us crazy can be an endless topic. I'm glad to be in this industry in spite of, or because of all the end users that make our days that much more exciting. If everything worked properly all the time, we'd all still be stuck in the basement playing video games.
