Don't see the duct tape or glue. Did they finally stop using it or was it just cut out of the pics?
Unlike some of Apple's other devices (iPhone, iPod, iPad, and MacBook Air), the 27" iMac doesn't use any tamper-resistant screws, just standard Torx and Phillips.
When you just make stuff up, stupid is usually a more applicable description...
Are you referring to a specific image title or description in this gallery?

image 10... Where's the Mini Display Port?
I see the audio in/out, the 4 USB2 ports, the FireWire, the 2 Thunderbolt, and the GigE port, but where's the Mini Display Port?
As on the latest MacBook Pros, the Thunderbolt ports also act as a Mini DisplayPort--same shape.

I have been using a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter on my MacBook Pro's Thunderbolt port for a few weeks now. It works, but I have an intermittent problem with the adapter getting hot (very warm to the touch) and the display cutting in and out. I've read forum post on Apple's support site about similar problems, but no about the adapter getting hot.

I think there are still a few bugs to work out with the Thunderbolt/Mini DisplayPort jacks.

I know about the Thunderbolt/MiniDP ports... we're getting MacBook Pros in at work that have them, and we're having the same problems--heating and display issues... My question was that the caption says "two Thunderbolt, one Mini Display Port"....

That's a lot to look through Bill.

Still good but takes a very long time. wink

Yeah. This one was probably the upper limit of what I would do in a cracking open gallery. If you use the "View all thumbnails" link below the image, you can see all the thumbnails and then skip around to the ones that look the most interesting.
why hasn't Apple decided to go USB3 yet? happy
If you look at the features of Thunderbolt, you have to ask, why would I want USB3 if I can get Thunderbolt devices with the same capabilities.

that have mixed Mac and PC environments.. Most of our PC laptops have FireWire ports on them, so using FireWire/USB drives is commonplace for us... we don't want to support an additional interface type, or have to buy a 'different' drive... I routinely use a G-Drive Mini (500GB, 7200RPM, FW800/USB2) between my MacBook Pro and my HP EliteBook 8540w... I haven't heard of any PC manufacturers that are shipping Thunderbolt--in fact, it's apparently Apple-only until next year...
So if you had an equally strong magnet, you could hold it up to the screen with the reverse polarity towards it and lift it away like magic?

Not to be used near MRI's or any other Magnetic Sources.

I can just see the Insurance Claim Form now Operator X was hit in the head by the Screen Cover flying off in it's attempt to destroy the Magnetic Imaging Equipment in the room. laugh

in this unit are better designed than the delta fans in my ASUS notebook, or else they are going to have a very high failure rate. The ones in my notebook last about 14-16 months, then start vibrating really bad. I only say this because it has almost the same shape, even if I can't read the part number on this one.

Some Chip IDs
Zorched 25th May 2011
IR 9310: -30v Power MOSFET.
LFE9249-R: Lan filter chip
H82/2117RV: Subprocessor- Sold as "Single chip microcomputer" I don't know what they're using it for, but it's an amazing little self contained PC on a chip.
tps3117: Audio amp
lvc08a: quad 2-input and gates.
SMSC 1428: Multiple Temp monitor with thermal shutdown
PS8301: Looks like a DisplayPort chip, but Parade technologies doesn't list it. All the 83xx chips seem to be related to DisplayPort switch applications. The manufacturing date off 0711 is either in the future (Jul of 11) or Nov of 07. If they're using a chip that old, they may have bought the entire run of the chip meaning it's a specialized chip just for Apple.

Zorched--
I used to work in the chip design software arena, and 0711 usually means that it was made in the 7th _week_ of 2011, or the week of Valentine's day... which is possible, given that this is May. happy

Is it possible to get an integraded slideshow? It's quite annoying to let the entire website load when clicking next.
Keep up the good work

Hard Drive Pins?
biffobabs 26th May 2011
I hear on Mac Rumours that Apple have changed the pins on the HD so that you have to use an Apple branded unit - is that so on your stripped HD?
Hey Mr Bill ... for some reason.. when I saw your first picture of the mac ... I thought of this..

I am maintaining iMac PCs here in the Middle East and I had discovered some colored and
back lines in the display. We have 25 IMac PCs and the number of faulty LCD is increasing. Is there any way how to solve this problem? Help please.

LED Lines

Had that straight out of the box last week. Two Blue lines and a thick red one down the left side - Apple exchanged it.

suction cups
treerod1@... 27th May 2011
I use two 2" suction cup to lift the front cover screen. It also makes for an easy way to handle the cover once it's off. You can buy these suction cups at bathroom supply section of most hardware stores for about $3.00.
