Cost is relative but only to a point
Consider a program like Photoshop currently with a price point between $700 ~ $1000.

With current software devlopment methods, the time and effot needed to develop it to the engineering standard other discaplines require could push this single program into the tens of thousands of dollars. The cust of development and resulting price of retail could very quickly outweigh the benefit it provides. Consumer software would quickly become unaffordable for the majority of computer owners; but we'd have solid software developed to the equivalent of airospace and structural engineering.

Now, enter the Ausie's. If they can automate enough of the engineering process to provide that higher build quality without inflating the development costs the way current methods would things become very interesting indeed. For lack of a HAL or P-1 AI that would could refine it's own code as it learned to produce better software for us meatstacks to interact with anyhow. grin
