Big time. Even engines built in the early 1950's are being upgraded to some very advanced computer controls. Every locomotive built since around 1990 has been totally computer controlled.

There is now a mandate to implement "positive train control," which is currently in a "Manhattan project" mode. Nobody is sure of basically anything, standards, interoperability, whether the dang things will even work... yet they're scrambling as fast as they can toward the goal and dumping a lot of $$$$$ into it.

Any programmers out there, a good job tip: look into this PTC mandate and if any of the coding looks familiar, send off a resume to the class I railroads that have to meet what industry insiders call the most ridiculous deadline ever devised. (of course that's your government's handiwork)
