His commentary was not that of someone talking about a few one-off, throw-away tools, though. It was that of someone talking about all software development, using his own development of reusable applications meant to be distributed to some set of end-users for ongoing use over a long period of time.

If he was talking about one-shot command line tools meant to automate a task once over thousands of iterations, or something like that, my responses would of course have been somewhat different.

So . . . yeah, I agree with what you said, as far as it goes.
