Depends on what you mean by replace, hide might be a better description for many of them. Doesn't matter how attractive the wrapper is, if there's still a turd inside it...
Most of their success was the IDE, which was better than anything else out on the market, wrapping MS's APIs, was a constant game of catchup, and as we all know, eventually they lost both battles badly.
