I've had my Facebook connections broken up into lists for ages. Family, childhood/high school friends, college friends, coworkers, people local to me, etc. I use privacy settings to share or mask my status updates to/from certain groups as necessary, not only for my privacy of thought but also not to unnecessarily clutter up other people's feeds. FB has changed up the list interface a time or two which doesn't make it terribly easy to manage lists, but it sure isn't hard.
