While I wouldn't go as far to say they're useless, I'd definitely agree they are a PITA to use. I'd even bet 90% or more of the users don't use them at all. "User friendly" and "Facebook" have never been used in the same sentence, well, unless "sux" was thrown in there somewhere as well.
