When I started working with mini computers it was so liberating to dispense with JCL. No need to get help from a systems programmer. And since the system command language (SCI with Texas Instruments, and DCL with DEC) included logic, flow control, operators, I-O commands, etc. it was possible to write entire simple applications using nothing else. I never looked back.
