When one got too grungy, put in a spare and clean the old one when you get the chance.
I loved the Mannesman-Tally band printer engine. If you kept it clean and lubed, it was solid and reliable, with almost never a mechanical failure. That engine was the innards of every 600-line RLP I ever repaired.
edit: The repairs were board replacements!
