From reports around the web, yes 2011 is compatible, just make sure it is up to date. And 2008 should be compatible as well, but if you need to reinstall 2008 you might need to try a trick like this:http://www.mactalk.com.au/11/72330-install-microsoft-office-2008-snow-leopard-without-rosetta.htmlRosetta does not work in Lion and Office 2008 installer requires it. I have not tried this yet as I don't think I'm going to install Lion for a while. Too many of the things I need to work will not. This is one that is hopefully remedied with the fix...Anyone know of some free iSCSI software that works with Lion? Currently SNS globalSan does not work and there is no update yet...

While they haven't made it available at the moment, word is out that Lion will be available on thumb drives a month or two down the road for just such purposes as you describe. As you will note above, there is a means to make a DVD or thumb drive of your own once you download the installer. The drawback to the Apple-created version is that as a thumb drive, they'll be charging about $70 from what I've read. What I don't know is what they will include on that media. The drawback to making your own is that if you're on a slow connection or have some other issue, the disk/thumb drive you make may not work. That said, for me the upgrade was reasonably quick and easy, taking less than an hour for the complete download and install.

I know that Apple wants everyone to download the software and that's great but is it even available in any other format? What if you want to install to a clean hard drive? Do I have to install Snow Leopard first?I would like to see a bootable thumb drive version available at the Apple store. That would be smaller, more robust, faster and potentially more useful for the server installation and users with multiple hard drives.
