...which can look back on decades of complacency brought about by ever-increasing prices and a captive market, but now are finding it hard to sustain those obscene profits in the face of super-inflated crude prices; coupled with continued increases in eco-awareness amongst that very market, and therefore are having to (gasp, sob) spend more money on safety and cleaning up after themselves.

Whereas MS has only been around for 30-odd years and can hardly be called complacent. A little behind the curve, sometimes, as someone else pointed out above - but hardly as evil or devastating to the environment as some oil companies. BG certainly does a lot more philanthropic work (or appears to, anyway) than any BP or Shell...
