Why the images?

These photos add nothing and the pages loaded slowly.
They turned an article I could have read in 40 seconds into a loading marathon of several minutes.
I like the use of photos when they are warranted, but these photos were nonsensical.
Toward the end of the article is a link beginning with "This story originally appeared..." that takes you here:

Yes even though my connection is fast enough so I didn't really feel delayed by them they were a complete waste of time

I liked em.
No, they were not pictures strictly of anything in the article, but this article is more about a concept than a physical thing. It merely borrowed the format of articles that are about physical objects.
As such, they were 'mere' decoration, but if you remove all unnecessary decoration, you tend to make ugly, uninteresting things.
