One of the ways that I'm working on that in my own consultancy is branching out into different revenue streams. A balance of new work, maintenance contracts for existing clients, product add-ons that we can sell repeatedly, sponsored blogging...it helps to smooth out the bumps, and hopefully will let us start getting that bigger cushion into place.

I'm also a big fan of leveraging partnerships like WebsiteSpark/BizSpark, which give you access to free licenses of various MS products.
