Pricing IS very complex...
...but the concept that competition contains is is not. Only entities in monopoly or oligopoly positions (usually the state) have near absolute pricing control. (And even then if their price is too high, people will not buy the product) Either way, as long as there is competition in the marketplace, lower taxation further up the supply chain will work its way down to retail price levels.
