Can't Get Past No 2 It Just Ruins The Whole Thing For Me.
A Tablet is often called a pill, a pill is the derogatory term used to describe a dill, cretin or fool, add forgetful to that and you have anyone who would buy anything Apple.
Remember the iPod battery fiasco, how about the problems that beset the dopes who bought the iPhone 2.
And you who would seriously include Apple in this survey???
DUH!

The Android tablets' OS mostly fails in its task of being integrated with the machine and the OS itself being functional without having to crack and re-engineer it. How's the Tech Support and warranty aspect of all these so-called pretenders to be an iPad? Which ones other than iPad are being utilized by school districts, large Fortune 500 businesses, government agencies and the airline industry? Answer: NONE!
About content creation on my iPad 2: I purchased a $29.99 Bluetooth keyboard which has its own internal lithium battery system, docks directly with my iPad 2's main port, and is wrapped around a slick leather cover/case which suffices for every iteration of poses and positions you could want the iPad 2 to be in. It rocks, and I can do all my Apple Developer work on the go easily now, and still keep it rational for times of relaxation.
As for depending on iTunes: how else would you suggest a tablet is administered and content added to it? With some proprietary Android system, or the Touchpad's lack of anything close to a media integrator, or the Xoom's ridiculous interface? Get real nice people, the votes are in and iPad wins hands down.
And for that dependence I do NOT buy all my media in the iTunes Store! 95% of my music and movies are self-made and critically excellent media ventures, no, make the number 98% because I have a grand total of 2 iTunes albums and ZERO movies from Apple in the mix...all my 9GB of media is custom made to my tastes, sizes and Hz requirements for the sound itself. It's all installed via iTunes this is true, but my platform is a PC Windows server, and I couldn't be further away from Apple's software and media blitzes and the Mac OS X syndrome.
Jason's list should be abolished because the readers here uniforming loathe it, disdain it, and could care less about it, frankly! Rating an Amazon tablet that isn't even being made yet No.2 is simply LUDICROUS to the maximum quotient...I agree with the poster earlier: WTF were you thinking when you made the non-existent Amazon tablet No.2?
iOS kicks literal arse over any/all pretenders OS's, Android or proprietary it doesn't matter, it's seamless, and is regularly updated, security is xlnt and state of the art, and iOS leaves every other tablet in its wake a million miles in the rear.
When somebody makes a better tablet than an iPad I'll buy it, but so far the remainder of the so-called competition is not any match for the Apple product, and it will be a long, long time before anything comes close to what you can do, and produce, on an iPad 2.

While I will agree that other tablets do try to emulate the iPad to one degree or another I can't agree that Android OS is only functional when it's cracked - this is simply wrong.
As an owner of 2 android devices (as I said earlier, a Streak and a Tf101) I have not rooted or cracked either device and they perform everything I want to do beautifully. I have access to an iPad2 and when I use it I always think 'Wow. This screen is nice and the animation is so smooth' but then find the experience lacking.
To my experience Android can do everything that iOS can and for a tech savvy user it does it with less restrictions and more options (I'm not talking about Flash here - Apple could include this if they would simply take their heads out of their backsides). The iOS experience seems very slick but is ultimately limited. Apple's biggest win is that their Apps store is lightyears ahead of the Android market.
Bottom line: iPad is the originator or the modern tablet experience - and rightfully so. Apple produced an easy to use consumer machine that looks good, feels good and is stable. Android is gaining all the time and for users who don't want to be stuck doing things 'the Apple way' have a perfectly viable, much more flexible, platform for their tablet experience.
I appreciate you love your iPad and I say more power to you. Me, I prefer Android and until Apple drop the dependency on the iTunes software, their ridiculous content management and their multitude of little plastic add ons to supply what should be standard connectivity options on a modern system I'll stay in the Google camp.
To any of you who love their iPads but feel that feel a little frustrated with certain parts of the experience, keep an eye on Android. It's not as slick as iOS yet, but it can do pretty much everything iOS does. It really is almost there.
To Google: Fix the Marketplace!! Apple got this right an although the Android Market is easy to use it's filter and search options are really hurting it.

The main drawback, and for me a deal-breaker, with the iPad is its lack of Flash support. In the UK, this makes it much harder to view content from the TV stations, such as BBC iPlayer (there is an app to view this, but it doesn't cover the many clips embedded in the BBC web site). Will Apple see sense now that Jobs has stepped down?
I dont get why this wasnt on the list. Its a fully functioning Tablet PC. Windows 7. Runs everything. I have used tablet pcs for years. I have 6 desktops. But the EXOPC is my main computer.
ASUS eee 12" windows 7 tablet PC also seemed nice, though never had my hands on one.

You didn't research this article very well... Had a bit of a Homer day I guess.
No big suprise here as Hiner bows down to the to his demi-god Jobs. Apoligizing for putting HP at #6 becuase it's going away, yet puts Amazon at #2 and no one has seen it yet! The big surprise is that Ipad 1 & 2 are at the top.
I agree for the price and the form factor that the Nook Color should be on this list. I hacked mine with Phiremod via the built in micro sd card reader. No change to bios or rom is needed. The linux based opereating system (ok android, whatever suits your fancy) is stable and runs clean. The boot process takes a little time but once the os is loaded there is no need to reboot very often. I went on 10 day vacation and left it on the whole time reading my nook book, browsing dolphin HD and playing angry birds - all of these available from the android store for free. Its not an iPad but I wont give my hard earned money to apple as I feel there products are overpriced for what is available in the market today (although many customers obviously don't feel that same way I do given Apple stock prices as of late) the bottom line is I can have my nook reader or my full android pad anytime I want.I love the stability of the phiremod OS.
Why can't they incorporate a cell phone into a tablet and give the buy the option of activating it with the carrier of his/her choice? Imagine how easy it would be to look up information while on a call! And how about an infrared link? A tablet would make a great full-featured programmable universal remote for the home theater crowd.
As for the article itself, had it been written 10 day ago I'm sure the HP TouchPad would have been high on the list. After all, HP is a big advertiser.

I've got to say this.....
Dell Streak 5
It isn't really a smartphone, more a mini Internet Tablet. Still, that depends on your point of view given the small form factor, I suppose.

I just bought a Lifebook at $800. It's a fully functional Windows 7 laptop/tablet pc having touchscreen/pen/keyboard capabilities with 4Gb RAM, 320Gb HD, and internal DVDRW. Yes it's heavier, but it does everything my 2002 Toshiba Protege did and more at a third of the price!
I'm sorry to break the news to you but you won't find anything but Windows Tablet mud slinging on this site.
Why would that be? Although I love my Droid devices if the W500 had performed better for me I'd have chosen a Windows tablet over my TF101. Admittedly I didn't research too many alternatives and once I'd found the TF101's Splashtop Streamer remote software I was happy to control my Windows device from my tablet instead but I see no reason to just universally sling mud at Windows tablets, iPad or droids of any shape or size.
The right tool for your needs and preferences, is what I say.

Just thought you may have missed a couple of up and coming Tabs. The Lenovo ThinkPad tab and the new Sony tab. The ThinkPad looks to be a winner in the business market were the Sony looks to be more of a home entertainment unit but both look like they should have been considered for the top ten.
Ipad 2 good price? Really? Its at least $100 more then Asus Epad and has half the memory not to mention a smaller screen.
Amazon is #2 because they have the environment setup that Apple had when they launched the iPad, no other company in the world is as ready to go as Amazon, they are just missing the hardware. They have a track record of selling "tablets" already, with millions of users, their own ecosystem is setup and ready for a specialized device to take over. If Google takes an Active hand in Motorola and gets rid of M's stupid UI then they may give Amazon a run for their money in the tablet market, other wise it's A and A for the win.
now on to why I actually took the time to respond... I agree the Touch Pad would have been #3 on the list if they had not canned it. HP is stupid, and should have dropped the Price to $250 and $300 for the two models and continued selling them at a loss, it won't hurt their bottom line at those prices and they could have found a way to sell more printers and laptops and desktops if they created enough integrated apps. There by increasing revenue in other departments to cover the loss of the tablets. This move to cancel the TouchPad will be remembered as the single dumbest move made by any company in the 21st century for a VERY long time. (even more than Apple suing because someone else thought a touch screen should have a bezel and be shaped similar to TV format in ratio, with a hole in it for a power cable, makes you wonder why they don't use the magnetic cables like the mac books...).

Really? A comment about a non-existant peice of hardware and nothing about Vizio?
Absolutely rediculous.
The Vizio is the only one in the field with an IR Blaster. That, to me, makes it quite slick. Price as well; falling well below many of the other competitors.
Amazon --- Indeed! Then there's the defunct HP...
C'mon, get your hardware together!

I am disappointed that you didn't include the Thrive in your list. I had been waiting for the right tablet offering to purchase. I already had a Nook Color and even rooted was not satisified with the hardware for a tablet. It is a fantastic reader but I did not like the browser on it nor the ones in the Android market place that would run on that version of Android. I wanted Honeycomb and looked hard at the Xoom when it came out. I still wasn't satisifed with the hardware capabilities that the Xoom offered and kept waiting for the next tablet manufacturer. I found the Thrive and ordered one before the release and it arrived on the 15th of July. I am very happy with it's capabilities. The features that sold me were the user replaceable back and batteries, the full size HDMI connection, mini & full size USB as well as the size. The viewable portion of the screen is not as big as the device, however the overall size is nearly identical to the Xoom. It is a little heavier at 1.6 lbs than most, but it is also sturdier as I would expect a device from Toshiba to be. It goes with me everywhere. While it is only available in WiFi, for my purposes that is more than enough. I rarely go to places that do not have WiFi available. If that ever changes, I will get a portable WiFi hotspot from my cellular carrier and have it available not only for my tablet but also my laptop. With the addition of a portable HD projector or HD TV, I can teach class or do a presentation. By the way, Toshiba has already put out 3 updates to the OS. As a tech who supports many, many models/manufacturers cell phones, I can tell you that one who updates the OS this frequently (and we all know how frequently Android changes), that is impressive to me. Just my 2 cents!
The Xoom is the productivity device for me, but then, maybe things are different for bloggers and accountants.
I love the Transformer. It has amazing endurance with the keyboard/extended battery. But, when my girlfriend decided she wanted to try a tablet, I sacrificed the Transformer instead of the Xoom. She loves it. She has a 14" Envy with all the bells and whistles, but the Transformer goes everywhere with her.
The Touchpad is an incredible value at $99. It took over as my work e-mail/BS for management generator, but in terms of doing WORK. No.
I have to charge the Xoom when I get home, because after an entire day of use in the lab, it's low. Reading on a 50% higher resolution screen is much more comfortable than on an iPad or the Touchpad. It's still not as good as the Kindle, but that's what whispersync is for. When the gf is lights off, the Xoom is backlit.

I wish someone would tell me where these low low prices are hiding. HP is advertising TouchPads for what they they've always cost; ditto for Amazon.
I have my little rooted Nook Color and would like it to have a pet TouchPad, but obviously I don't want to pay MORE than the Nook plus tax and handling, the Micro SD, and the 3 Millenium Trilogy e-books cost me.

The arguments aren't exactly good for any of the top tablets in this list. The Amazon at #2 is hilarious.
of tablets that don't exist. I would also say that at the top of my list is the iPad6 for Windows 8. A fully functioning iPad6 that runs a full version of Windows 8 (with SP 1&2), 64bit. This tablet also washes your car and spanks your kids! Oh oh, wait, sorry, no Windows tablets on this websites' top ten lists. Never mind, we'll all just have to spank our own kids . . .
I dont see mention of the Toshiba thrive tablet which is comparatively better than a few of the tablets mentioned.
Well he has a point on all of those future features. Amazon is in a position to compete. But I don't think you should jump the gun on this. This guy just called Amazon a winner #2 with out joining the race. Its like calling Cam Newton the next Payton Manning.
A lot of household names in the tablet list. If I had to vote, I'd put my money on the Huawei Ideos S7. Combined with an AT&T SIM card it makes for a great on the road tablet. Another worthy mention is the Kiztek Socializer Pro - nice little 7 inch eReader.
On 6th, a dead tablet. On 2nd, a rumoured tablet. On 5th, an ereader. On 1st, a toy.
And, talking about Nook, this is plain BS of market confusion and the raise of tablets as super-duper devices: tablets are not ereaders, and the ereaders are definitely more usefull than the tablets; actually, they really are useful at something.

How are we suppose to trust assessments from TechRepulic when they boldly and blindly rate a non-existent device at #2 ? I can see maybe number 8-10, but right up there is the iPad will make me question how they evaluate anything. Who is the editor of this site? Did they even read that list?
I would have to agree 100% the Thrive should be on the list and high up on the list.
I have an Android phone for fun and games apps. What I wanted from a tablet was a computer I could be as productive as a laptop running Windows programs like Office. That's why I choose the ASUS Eee Slate. Very versatile at home or at work, and doesn't skip a beat as a computer.
If you're going to include the Amazon tablet, you might as well have the iPad3 at #1 because I hear will be better than the iPad2!
I find it very strange that the Toshiba thrive isn't mentioned. I compared the specs of a number of the current tablets and I believe that the toshiba is a better machine. i believe it should have made the list at either no.2 or no. 3
I do not see how you can Rate the Amazon in second place when it is not even out yet - call yourselves a technology company - pah!
I just have a general question, Toshiba Thrive was it not up to par to make this list. I have had the opportunity to test one and found it very user friendly. I do agree these all need to be made printer friendly also.
I will recommend that if anyone wants a well made tablet do not buy anything other than the best...go iPad!
I found the article interesting. When I finished reading the eval on the galaxy tab 10.1 I realized that you had left out one of the most important things People look for. I myself would not buy a tablet without a SD card slot integrated into the body of the tablet. I do home inspections and I need to load pictures off my camera in the field onto my tablet on the fly. So that's what I want to know in a review. I don't want to have to use airport type system to get my pic's onboard. I just want something that's going to work all the time fast and easy like an SD Slot.. Thanks..
I looked for the same thing which is partly why the TF101 came up trumps for me. Micro SD slot on the tablet, USB and normal SD card slots on the dock and even a HDMI out on the tablet too? Love it.
The ASUS isn't the only tablet with such connectivity options though - have a good look at the specs or better still go and have a play at your local PC World, Currys, and whatever the US electrical retailer equivalents might be and see what suits you. What I like might not be what you like, after all

What a joke. The TouchPad is junk. I bought one in the firesale and it's BARELY worth the $100. And web browsing is NOT one of the strengths of this device. It's horrible. And how can it be the best for business users when the first 50-60 days it was available you couldn't even EDIT or CREATE basic office documents!? It's extremely slow and unresponsive. About the only thing it's good for is letting my 3 year old play angry birds. Save your money and get a real tablet.
I also bought a HP touchpad in the fire sale and love it. I applied some home-brew patches that several articles online said to do and it's been rock solid since. Web browsing is fast, switching between cards is easy, viewing YouTube video's was great and speakers are very powerful (compared to other tablet speakers).Battery life is pretty good also and when I don't use it for a few days hibernation mode barely uses any power.
When I'm at home I use it for work email (over my cell phone), web browsing when i'm not at my pc, I listen to music on it all the time and play several games on it.
I've created word documents for work and sent them to the cloud to be further finished later when I'm actually at work.
I'm really bummed that HP dropped this ball because this was and is still a solid product. I use this tablet daily and if Web-OS disappears i'll look into putting something else on it.

The tablet I really want to know more about wasn't even considered. You reviewed an Amazon tablet that doesn't exist yet and not the Lenovo ThinkPad? With all the useful features on it for business and education I would think it would have been at least considered.
Well done! Thank you very much for professional templates and community edition

I thing your forgetting the learning curve with the Ipad, not using it but with having new software and teaching users how to open documents and run programs. Not to mention the "I made this in Word 2003 at home then emailed it to myself, can you show me how to change it on my ipad?"
Don't kid yourself I get this all the time.
Don't kid yourself I get this all the time.
What is required is a folding screen that opens to a round 12", and has OS that is compatable with standard computers. So you can use the same programmes and connect to it without problems.
The good: Apple's iPad 2 is dramatically thinner and boasts front and rear cameras, FaceTime video chat, a faster processor, and 3G options for both AT&T and Verizon.??????
The bad: The iPad's screen resolution hasn't budged, photo quality is mediocre, there's still no Adobe Flash support, and ports for HDMI, USB, and SD all require adapters.??????
The bottom line: The iPad 2 refines an already excellent product. Its easy-to-use interface, vast app catalog, and marathon battery life bolster Apple's claim to being the king of tablets.???
thanks

Read the comments and compare the votes. You people are funny. Ipad 2, it's the peoples choice, get over it, no one is forcing you to buy it.
