M$ set standards for application development on x86 OS. They commanded the evolution of LDAP effectively crushing NOVELL. Even OSX must include interoperability with AD. The way they did things was not always better but they did define the way things are done.

The internet runs on Linux so it makes sense that Mozilla should lead web standards but Google came along to lead the way. Some day we will tell fairy tales about these companies to our grand children.
