Getting tired of all of the whining about what tablets lack. Same nonsense people moaned about when laptops became more prevalent. Here's an eye-opener for the whiners...You do NOT have to have a tablet. Nor do you HAVE to have whatever the next, latest-greatest tech device is that comes down the line.Tablets are not designed and not currently capable of completely replacing a desktop or laptop. They are for convenience more than anything else. You cannot stuff 10lbs of potatoes into a 5lb sack so get over it or wait until there is more functionality available. The primary gripes seem to be that:1. cannot print (actually, you can!)2. onscreen keyboard (all primates are not created equal...buy a full-size tablet or a USB keyboard)3. peripherals (buy a USB hub genius!). I know it's the point of this article but geesh, you people should look around in the world, their are people and children (here in America too!) starving to death every day. Why not take a small fraction of your over-priced gadget budget and contribute to a local charity or food bank? $400+ would buy a lot of meals for your fellow citizens.

Here is my short list of requirements for a portable device. It must have the support for devices already mentioned, it has to be a touch screen - not a netbook style keyboard - and, oh yes, it has to have a REAL OS. Anything that runs nothing but apps is useless to me. I would prefer a version of Windows so I can add a dual boot Linux partition but I could live with a Linux only OS as long as it is powerful enough to run some windows programs in WINE.Are you listening tablet makers? A REAL OS!

I bought a Viewpad 7 from Amazon this summer for our trip to Europe. It's basically an over-sized (7") Android (2.2) phone BUT it has DocsToGo, GPS, Maps, Gmail, etc. all built in! It worked great, and it was easy to keep up my Blog (Swype is awesome). I simply plugged in a SIM from over there and was good to go, although data was costly. The phone worked well and we used it mainly as a speakerphone, but sometimes plugged in the earphones to keep things private ... my wife put one in her ear and I put the other in mine. Why don't all tablets do that?! I am just about ready to make this my one-and-only device for traveling... maybe even daily use since it has Bluetooth. I was surprised to see it is 3G on AT&T but only "E"dge on T-mobile.

Apple improved on existing technology and it is great... but has serious flaws.itunes is great too , if you like it and the whole ethos of being stuck in an Apple ecosystem and payment system. I love openess, I love the freedom, I love the Android experience but I can undertsand where non-technical folk can feel much happier with Apple. It is a great system if you like all that. The downside is being controlled by Apple. Not even alllowed to save contacts on your sim... thats going too far!Sadly... All the folk I hear telling me how intuitive it is, how simple it is, how great it is, really just come across as wannabees. They wanna look cool, they wanna look like they know what they're talking about... but generally come across as prats.Do I want an iphone that lasts 1 day on charge or a BB torch that last 2+... hmm that's a no brainer but then I dont use apps at work, and have no interest in itunes at work. Do I want my kit locked to a PC? No.There's plenty of good kit out there if everyone just opened their eyes and bought what they want, for the job. That might be Apple and others but no big company is going to put all it's eggs in one basket... and neither should you. Unless you're really dumb!

You make good points, however I believe the dream for many road warriors is to travel lightly and still remain productive. It is frustrating to come back to the office and have to sit down for hours, or days getting caught up on computer related tasks. Ideally, if one could be productive no matter where they are, it creates a better more efficient use of time and energy. As I speak with non-techies, who love their Ipads, they do not feel they are missing anything...I on the other hand want at least a netbook with me on the road, so I can continue to work as time allows, thereby freeing me from some of the backlog facing me back at the office. Plus, to be able to quickly respond in a timely and effective manner to requests from customers and vendors helps relieve stress. Guess I am seeing a request from the more technologically oriented segment of our society to have a great overall light-weight tool that offers the user independence from all tethers. One interesting comment I heard from an Ipad owner is he has decided to go back to a basic cell phone, since the Ipad can handle anything a smartphone can do for him, all he needs is a way to make and take phone calls. This choice would save him paying for two data plans. Does this mean smart phones and tablets are actually in more direct competition than tablets and computers?

Like your phone... you can take it everywhere. But you wouldn't do that with your PC or laptop. It's there, ready to power on in a minute; it doesn't drink power; it will last a day of use; and you wont have your legs burnt by the CPU. Not a problem if you're basically in the house but a real boon if you travel much. They're not for creating like a laptop user might, but most folk just use internet and some odd apps from time to time. Like me here.....

I think thats the key point, until it locks and then its totally useless tillyou attach it to itunes. Itunes is the real limiter for me, plus the lack of zip and issues reading password protected docs. Minor inconveniences to the masses clearly; it really bugs me that all the limitations are swept under the carpet.I prefer my Transformer but I know others wont; and I know plenty of folk who fail to see why ports are of any use. You just can't get past folks misplaced loyalty, and you cannot underestimate the human stupidity... that seems higher if the target (a) has the use of an ipad, or (b) just bought an ipad. They can't see past the fact it has a white logo on it and can't wait to impress evryone with the white Apple logo. I support them in work and it's like being with kids in a toy shop!
I cancelled my order for the tablet. I'd ordered direct from Lenovo as the ship date was advertised as 8/29. After I completed the order, the expected ship date was 9/12, then this morning it changed to 9/21. Seems they were holding the entire order based on availability of an accessory. It ended up being fortunate as I was able to re-order from a 3rd party seller. I get discounts from them becuase I work for a not-for-profit and that's a perk we get, so it was $50 cheaper, so I upgraded and got the 32 gb, and I'll have it Friday. As a final kick-in-the-pants, when I called Lenovo to cancel, I got someone who could barely speak english, when I said I was cancelling, my order had magically just been placed on the truck for shipment and I'd have it next week (yeah, sure), and if I cancelled, then, to paraphrase, I was a loser and didn't deserve to have the product anyway. OK, that pi$$ed me off. So, my experience ordering from Lenovo directly sucked. I'll never order from them again, and will go through a reseller instead. Just saying....
