I'm convinced that tablets and touchscreens are huge drivers for the ribbon interface. There's a really well written MSDN blog article by Steven Sinofsky about the design process for adding the ribbon interface to Explorer in Windows 2008. In it he observes that "...while not primarily a touch interface, the ribbon also provides a much more reliable and usable touch-only interface than pull-down menus and context menus."

I had WordPerfect on my desk from 1989 through 2002 and liked it a lot. But because NONE of our clients kept it, we had to convert to Word. That was a rude shock because Word was so obviously primitive compared to WordPerfect. And Word is just plain BADLY DESIGNED. The epitome of how illiterate, lazy and inconsiderate geeks with zero aesthetic taste can foist non-ergonomic crap on the rest of us. The only reason we are discussing this retro, deficient product is that it's a monopoly.

I forwarded it to show him he was not at all alone. Then I went and looked for the comment that was particularly pertinent to his complaint. SHOCK!!! All the posts on that page had been deleted.Yesterday there were multiple posts out there commenting about the max bogusness of content in this blog post and how it showed TechRepublic to be a Microsoft advertising mechanism. The ribbon wastes screen space, is not logical (not to me anyway) and is very obtuse at times. When I sit down at a new computer that I'm going to use for some time I always set up custom toolbars, then I have the commands I want and don't clutter things with stuff I don't use.Oh well, let's go and look at open office.PS The big joke is that like the woman who wrote the article praising the ribbon, I also earn a crust writing technical manuals.

I rarely look elsewhere for the things I use all the time because they are easily put on my QAT. For those of you who don't like having the ribbon taking up so much screen geography, change it so it only shows up when you hover over it. That's easy enough to do.
Ribbon hogs the screen and you can't get rid of it. In Menu days, I had learned the Alt-shortcuts for the features I used. They still work on Word/07 but I can't get rid of the annoying ribbon. To me, the ribbon is nothing more than a new menu hierarchy that consumes more screen space than the menus used to, and the ribbon options are in different places that are not intuitive. Invariably, for most things I do from the ribbon, I end up Googling an answer for how to do it.I used to know "how to drive" Word. Then Microsoft "removed the steering wheel" and replaced it with "multi handle bulldozer steering". I can hack my way along, but it used to be a lot easier with the controls I had learned for the last 20+ years. I've been using Word since DOS days, and since Word for Windows 1.0. As of Word 2007, I am much less efficient than ever before, (no) thanks to the ribbon. So for my $0.02, I use fewer advanced features in W/2007 because of the ribbon, and the decrease in my productivity because of it. Flash and glitz, marketing hype, and the net result is a loss. Thumbs down.

Perhaps it's the global warming denial twits who got it fixed so you couldn't type CO2 correctly.I tried to buy the paid version, though only because some friends and colleagues had to use it. Impossible to install this on Vista because M$ were incapable of cleanly uninstalling their own trial version. Saved 100 euros. I then found out that as an organiser of a very small charitable association I should have been paying the full prohibively exorbitant price anyway.Who do you have to bribe to capture a large part of the World market, and an even larger part of the commercial market, for such expensive and user-hostile software, when you can get alternatives that are only a little bit frustrating without paying a penny?
