The user could screen the e-mails in the Reading Pane without triggering the Read Receipt (by going into reading pane options and uncheck 'mark item as read when viewed in the reading pane') and the boss can read emails "normally" and trigger the Read Receipt as she actually reads the emails.

I am not advocating the use of read receipts, I am simply answering the question.
