Cloud Computing - The Great Marketing Gimmick of the 21st Century
Yes, Microsoft (with SAAS) and others have tried to re-market "it" as something else, but in the past have failed to get traction with technologists and the general public. They have tried to reinvent the wheel by disguising/painting "it" with another color, hoping to fool everyone. "Cloud Computing" faux finally worked! What is "it" you ask? Yup, it's the mainframe concept. Even though technology's hardware, software and protocols have changed, but the concept of a centralized system has not. Mainframe is an example of a centralized system. We have went from one end of the pendulum (centralized system) to distributed system (PC, LAN, etc.), and now back to centralized system ("The Cloud"). The difference is that the target audience has changed. Modern centralized system is designed not just for techies but for the business, users, public (e.g. everyone) as well. Hopefully, IT and business leaders have gain the understanding that they do NOT have to take one of the extreme options but can select a combination of technology(ies) anywhere in the "Technology Pendulum" that meets with their organization's goals. So the next time some "guru" speaks as if s/he have stumbled onto this new Cloud technology, you can sit back and have a good laugh at the newbie. It's "back to the future" folks. Good luck you guys/gals!
