Steve Jobs

Hero or villain, Steve Jobs was a giant in the industry, and everything we all do was so incredibly influenced by the man. Very few people can single-handled change the course of society. You've got to respect the man for his achievements, and realize that the tech sector is somehow lessened by his passing. He didn't just change technology, he changed the face of cities (San Jose), he changed the fabric of society - and he started with ICs and breadboards in the garage of a small suburban home. What an amazing life. I wouldn't have wanted to be born in any other time. Can you imagine how boring life was before visionaries like Grove, Moore, Noyce, Gates, Hewlett, Packard, Wozniak, and Jobs revolutionized our world? Being there for the whole ride, from start to finish is such a fortunate time to experience. As a young boy I wanted an Apple II, 30 years later I was chasing after iPads and iPods. I think it would be easy to argue that among all of the names above, Jobs stands alone as the most broadly influential.

Written on my Mac Mini by a Microsoft Shill and Android fanboy. Thanks for 30+ years of amazing Tech, Steve. I'll miss you.

There are no heroes or villains, only pioneers.
They do what they have to do, omelets get made, and yes, eggs get broken.
Those who trail behind can only look at the backs of the giants striding ahead, thinking - what a force of nature.

Staying human, though, is the hardest achievement. I think Steve pulled that one off exceedingly well. The fact that we know him as much by his first name as by his last name points to that. As all men, he died a human, and his loss to his family is as all such losses are. Grief cannot be measured nor compared - my heart goes out to them.

Steve Jobs was a man on a mission. I just regret that he didn't get more time to pursue it.

Jobs didn't build anything, but he had this innate sense of style and was never satisfied until reality met his expectation.

He also had an uncanny ability to influence people, and he knew a good idea when he saw it. But he wasn't a builder, that honor lies with Steve Wozniak, Don Massaro, et-al.

Give Jobs his due, but not at the expense of others accomplishments.

There were other hobbyists who built computers in their basements and garages.

Woz was a genius, but it took someone with Jobs' force of will to turn it from a small company into a corporate giant, and to keep the company growing and innovating instead of sitting on their laurels.

Steve was the visionary, the risk taker, the guy who would not accept good enough. He demanded "insanely great" products, and pushed his teams to create them. His genius was to look at a good product, and figure out how it could be great, then to inspire the builders to make it so.

Apple as a company could have slipped under the waves at a few points in history, including when Steve left and the strategy of licensing the Mac to third party makers failed miserably. Steve was responsible to pulling the company out of the dumps, setting them in a new direction and inspiring them to greatness. That is a rare gift.
As I perhaps understated, Jobs was a leader who could inspire more than just us "tech heads." He made technology sexy. But he was definitely not the guy with the soldering iron and integrated circuits.

It takes both style and substance to be successful. I could just as easily ask where would Jobs have been without Woz, early on in his career.
Imagine if Apple's doors had remained closed to him, but another maker would have given him its throne and scepter.
Would he have failed?
Or would he have made this other maker what Apple is today?

Sadly there are plenty of great technologists, inventors and innovators whose life works has remained stunted, unrealized or ignored. Credit where due, sure. But that credit would have been much smaller, if it had not been so successfully communicated to the world.

When you have an idea AND a product you have something tangible to sell. When all you have is an idea, it's a much harder and longer sale!
Apple would never have been born without Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak together. Jobs wouldn't have had the product to drive and Woz didn't have the drive for the product. As a team, they were un-matched. However, when it came to making Apple what it is today, Jobs carried the burden pretty much on his own shoulders; finding the people who could create the products he envisioned and driving them to make it the best it could possibly be.

Would eventually have been picked up by someone willing to manufacture his product en masse, there's no doubt about that. His contribution is much more tangible than Jobs was at that time for sure! Jobs ability to envision and drive people (while being overly abrasive) was his strongest quality.
Excellent posting Charles and factually accurate, something we've been missing here lately as well as in th enews about Jobs!
and learned you could really admire someone yet not subscribe to their personal foibles. He was a formidable presence. Woz, not so formidable, but equally admirable and tho I've never met him I get this feeling that I would like him.

It was apparent Woz was dealing with a lot during the interviews yesterday.

Steve was a rare individual who did not have to top the hill to know what was on the other side.... he imagined how the other side could be. We'll miss you, Steve. God's peace on your family at this time.

I heard it on the radio and couldn't believe it. Steve Jobs didn't look that bad last time we saw him. How could he have died? Well, love him or hate him you have to admit he was a guy to respect in the IT world. (I say this owning a Windows phone and working on a PC, but I do have an Itouch.) So while he was the biggest competition for Microsoft, he was the best competition. Way to go man, you did great. *Goes for a high five knowing there won't be a return* :'(

Your contributions to men and mankind may never be equaled. My sincerest condolences to family and friends.
He was the driving force behind Apple. Hopefully, the research department at Apple has already started on his clone to continue his run of successes. Without Jobs will they NOW be just another company?
Where will somebody with his verve, elan and panache be discovered?

The Legacy
biancaluna 5th Oct 2011
I think Jobs touched a lot of us, either on a technology level or by what he stood for, particularly since he was diagnosed. Oftentimes, it is the bad news, the call to arms, the death warrant before ones time, the life events that knock your breath away, that make you change and change your world view. I think in Jobs case, it merely clarified what was there already - the intense desire to put that ding in the Universe.

Mate, you dinged, you dinged that thing and donged on the way to that other realm. The creative energy was palpable, for those blessed to see it up close or even from afar. And underneath, just a nerdy guy with a dream in a shed.

I think it is that passion that Steve was able to ignite both in himself, Apple and the people who watched him is a big Legacy. Godspeed. The world is at once emptier and fuller now that you have left.

Rest in Peace Steve. You inspired us to see the possible in the impossible and to blaze new trails where none dared venture. As an answer, whenever comments are cherry-picked, many people are going to get left out. Lack of inclusion doesn't necessarily indicate disregard. Perhaps Z. didn't have a response by the time the original TR article was posted.

I think that Woz is really the "other big fish in this picture" that we don't have a statement from here.
It is painful to remember that great man like Steve Jobs can not be here forever. But he lives on in our hearts! Adieu!

Your creations are surrounding us from ipad to iphone to macbooks. I was actually very fond of Steve as my first computing experience was actually with an Apple II early generation computer. I was only 4 years old back then. Even though it's monochrome but it was really our family's pride and joy at that time. Now you've brought the world into our pocket and we would like to thank you from the bottom of our heart for giving us products that are part of our life. Rest in peace Steve and may your legacy lives on.

What great people STEVE and Osborne; what great personal computers they created forcing IBm to enter because of success. As an INdian I salute beloved steve JObs who gave millions of Indians like me jobs and courage to fight. May he live eternally with us.

Every morning I sit at my computer to start work on one project or other, I always feel like saying thank you Steve for all the innovations you have made over the years to improve my working conditions. In recent years you also improved my mobile way of dealing in business, you have made my life a lot easier.
To say just Thank you seems to little to late, but I'll always remember you through using the products you gave to the world.

The world as lost one of the greatest icons of the XX century and technology has lost one of its biggest boosters.
The legacy of Steve Jobs is more than technology itself. It's not only how we use technology but it's about all the feelings that it arouses in every person using it.

To his family and friends, the deepest sympathy.
