First observations...Have a touch-screen device to demo this. I'm not sure what real value add a non-touch capable device is going to get out of the developer's preview right now. The MetroUI is touch-centric (and cool). I'm using an HP 21.5" touch screen LCD with a core-duo centrino laptop - The promise of Win 8 with touch screen devices is clear. Second - make sure your screen size is adjusted. I struggled with this for awhile. The demo native apps wouldn't load - in fact, nothing would load from the Metro UI except the Settings tile. If I switched to the traditional desktop, I could get IE to load up. Got into the screen resolution and realized I was at 800x600. Moved the resolution up and suddenly the Metro UI started working a whole lot better. Haven't had much of a chance to play with it since I got it set up - and it seems a little choppy on the dual-core Centrino - but you can see the potential and where it is headed - and I think that bringing parity between the desktop OS and the mobile OS is a good idea. I suspect we're going to start seeing a lot of ASUS "Transformer" type devices. Once you've worked with notebook/clamshell devices with touch screen - it just makes sense. It doesn't even need to convert or transform into a tablet - just having a touch screen is a big bonus. Microsoft seems to be on the same page as I am with this.

Sure I have a Dual Boot Option into Windows 7 Professional 64 Bit...."I continue to use XP because many e-mail, Word, and Excel tasks are simply easier to do in that environment, but I got tired of rebooting between XP and Win7.After trying several options, I found that running XP as a virtual machine within Win7 using VMWare's free Player is an excellent solution. Had to learn a few new tricks to put the VM and its associated files in a separate partition (not required, just my preference), but the payback in terms of efficiency has been tremendous. The right tool for the task at hand is now on my desktop at all times, and files are easily moved between the OSs.

downloaded it, and have been really trying to be open about it. I am usually the agent-what I see is a tablet os though. and with it on a desktop (64 bit with dev tools) and a netbook (32 bit) neither are right for this os. It is not a desktop set up - unless Microsoft envisions everyone to have all in one touch screen computers. positive points- easy install, already stable code and will work great for what it is really targeted to - tablet and phones - not mouse/keyboardnegatives- not keen on the single sign in with my live account- once that gets hacked - you lose it all, as the hacker controls your cloud, your email, your desktop, your phone (if you use windows phone) your tablet etc- that's the vision with wIn 8 - always connected the other issues have all been said before- no command prompt, no run, no start menu - just the metro page etc.but then again - this is optimized for touch screens and finger gestures - it is compatible with mice and some keyboard commands- but that's compatible - not native interactiondon;t expect the beta to be much different BTW- the code base is already set, the design is set- I really think MS needs to partner with someone and just launch thier own tablets then rethink the desktop side

I didn't notice the poll. I've downloaded Win 8, installed it in a VirtualBox VM, used it for 10 minutes, then went back to my XP VM. The way I see it, Windows 8 is like that two-faced guy from The Hitchhiker's Guide -- the normal, Windows 7-ish face, and the creepy Metro face that pops up and makes you question if you're really seeing what you're seeing. It's also not as good at either of those things as dedicated desktop and tablet OSes are, so there's really no point in using it.Windows 8 looks like the brainchild of someone with vast resources and absolutely no common sense. We haven't even successfully transitioned the PC market from 32-bit to 64-bit yet, and MS thinks we can jump directly to touch devices as our primary interface? Did I sleep through a decade of UI transitioning? Have applications and workflows progressed that far, or is having Angry Birds the only requirement to be a mature platform these days?Side note: I find it interesting that everyone is complaining the release cycle is too fast after the entire industry complained that XP was getting long in the tooth while waiting for Vista. I think Apple and Linux have a better strategy here with the relatively frequent, incremental low- or no-cost upgrades, which bring likewise incremental features and (hardware) support. Way better than dropping a huge paradigm shift on the users of millions of devices every few years.
