The comment in proper English should have read: "It reminds me of what Steve Jobs said about Microsoft's Bill Gates having no creativity; (he) just steals ideas from others. That's why Apple churns out so many innovative products." Bad grammar, syntax and spelling can detract from the impact of a statement and make the speaker appear considerably less intelligent than he or she really is. I don't think there is as much lack of creativity on the part of Bill Gates as the writer alludes. Saying that Bill Gates "steals ideas" is borderline slander. We all have at one time or another seen an idea or concept that inspires us to at least think about a better version or an alternative version. If anything, Mr. Gates has been too conservative, less inclined to take risks. Steve Jobs, when he came back to Apple, realized that he had to take a 'make or break' risk to bring Apple back into the marketplace. Steve Jobs had a superb ability to analyze and take calculated risks. Some were bad, but many more were really good which more than made up for the losses incurred from the risks that didn't pan out. In the case of the Courier Tablet, Mr. Gates and staff assumed that their new product would be eclipsed by the I-Pad (just on popularity and the name alone) and my guess is that he and his staff were still suffering from "Zune Shell-shock" which made them change their mind about marketing a good product. My guess is that the fear of being trumped again by Apple caused them to make a stupid decision to limit marketing of the Courier.

You are right about ESRI support on the desktop, but they do target IOS with the ArcGIS mobile product. They were originally a *NIX based product so I'm sure the only reason they don't target OSX is market.ADDENDUM (11-08-2011): I'm using ArcGIS on my iPad right now to review some biological station locations.

First, since the Courier never reached the market, we really don't know what kinds of capabilities it would have had. Personally, I think it would have been very fair competition to the iPad simply because of its book-like form factor.Secondly, there are tablets with the capabilities hinted at by these videos, though they usually use multiple apps to do so. Really, that's not much of an issue as you can do your shopping, your scheduling, your writing, drawing, pretty much anything the Courier might have done is already available on other platforms--if you only deign to look.Past tense? Present tense? Let's look into Future tense instead and see where we're going instead of where we've been.

As Bundy, above, points out, the Courier was a tablet--or rather a book--with a purpose; it was the form factor that would have made it, not the software. Quite honestly the teasers we saw about the software made it look grossly underutilized. Yes, software is important, but you're limiting the device to a single app when in all reality that thing could have run thousands of apps, as long as they weren't full Windows apps with that overblown overhead that comes with all desktop apps today. The Courier, in my opinion, would have done far better than any of the tech pundits want to believe.

The Courier would have forced Microsoft to realize that people really don't need such huge overhead simply by tracking the normal usage of the product. And certainly it's not comfortable trying to type when the keyboard is above elbow level. No, what I see is Substance with Style, a devices that is only as much as you need when you need it. Why tote around a keyboard all the time when your one finger is faster and you don't even need to set the tablet down to use it? In all honesty, my tablets have flat replaced my laptops for every purpose I once used a laptop--especially meetings and classes. Don't get me wrong, there really are times when a laptop is a better choice--but for me, the tablet has replaced 90% of that functionality by simply being more mobile.
