Nothing designed for a large population with varying skill sets should ever be designed assuming the user is "smart." Software for highly specialized fields....database technicians, musicians, etc, etc are a different story, of course. One of the reasons Apple has been so successful is that Steve Jobs has assumed we're all idiots who mostly want to look at photos, videos, and browse the internet.
