I work in IT and I deal with dumb users every day. Its sad because there are so many people who are great in their fields who cant even use a cell phone or figure out which button turns on a computer. @johnbasslosangeles, i agree that Apple is so successful because they design for the idiots who just want a button to solve anything, but I also think that is the problem. You will eventually end up with a bunch of idiots who wont know how to do anything unless you hold their hand,
Lets use a movie analogy to compare the two types of worlds that we have the potential to develop as a species, Star Wars and Star Trek. In Star Wars (dumb users), there is amazing technology but everyone assumes that it just works with a button and nobody really knows how it works, its just does. If your not smart enough to open a locked door, call a robot to fix it for you. Robots are smart and they know how to resolve all your issues for you. No robot and no easy button and you will probably die because you cant tie your shoe on your own.
In Star Trek (educated users), there is amazing technology and most things also work with a button or few. The big difference is that people are educated and also trained in what to do if something goes wrong or if something new pops up. That door is locked? Lets try to reroute the power and short it out to open it and if that dosent work, lets try something else. Trapped on a planet and you will survive because you know how to do things without a dependence on an easy button.
If you make everything so easy that it caters to the dumbest of user, you will end up with a society that has no concept of what to do when things are not easy or that button doesn't work. Remember back when people couldn't change the clock on their VCR's? Those same people are the same ones who now have a cell phone with a button that calls someone to make a call for them. IT and technology has been expanding and doubling at an amazing rate but we will never advance anywhere until education can show that same level of expansion and also intelligence.
