...because of its built-in file previewer. Sure you can use gThumb to preview photo folders, but dolphin previews many other types, such as a simple .txt file!
I had to install dolphin instead of Thunar in Xubuntu just for this reason! (in 11.10 Thunar is the Xubuntu file manager by default, but you can always install others, just use Synaptic package manager! (I tried using the Ubuntu software center and the thing's a DOG that just freezes up, so got RID of that! )
