We're not afflicted with sprawl, but it's not due to self-discipline. It's mostly because my users can't figure out what to do with it.

Hi, a great article about the ease with which SP can be misused.
I'd like to add one thing about quotas, though.
A similar but different approach would be to implement the content types correctly, and have unnecessary stuff archived by policy.
