I worked at a large mult-national company. we were given over-time pay but primarily because earlier on as the center came up and gre, we were overloaded with work and they didn't want to hire someone to help, just to be laid off later.
In general, I think IT employees should be compensated with overtime over a certain number of hours are reached but way more than usual. I think most IT employees know that when they are hired they expect to do some OT - it's part of their job. But something like a off hour server migration, moving the facility, some major disaster or similar is different.
