Go to Windows Explorer > Help > About - and you will see that Vista is NT 6.0 and "Windows 7" is NT 6.1. "Windows 7" is actually a major (and very good) bug-fix for Vista.
For reference "XP" was NT 5.1 - a major update to the (already) excellent Windows 2000 (NT5.0)
