Our cost of licensing per processor/core was too high to virtualize Oracle
Within the past year, we needed to upgrade our Oracle servers. Since Oracle claimed to support virtualization, it seem like the way to go since we'd had good success with our other virtual servers.

When we were ready to install on the new system using our existing licenses, we found out that regardless of how many processors that we configured in the VM guest, we where required to license the total processors/cores in the VM host server.

We ended up purchasing 2 physical servers with the same count of processors/cores as our existing licenses for about a fifth of the cost of buying more licenses.

I'm not sure how their licensing is now, but until it changes, we will never be able to virtualize our Oracle servers.
