It says your post was 2 hours ago but it sounds like something one would have said 5 years ago. Virtualizing apps like SQL and Exchange is very common now. With an off the shelf 2U server with 12 cores and 144GB ram you can virtualize SQL quiite nicely. I have many 4 core/16GB SQL servers virtualized per VMware host. It fits in nicely with the way SQL CPU/core licensing works to save you a lot of mone if you run SQL Enterprise.
