Throw stuff at the wall or toss crumbs to the proles?
A much simpler explanation might be that now they are big enough and are surrounded by sufficient hyperbole to encourage smaller competitors to waste *their* money on the futureless projects, in order to see what is a forlorn hope and what flies. Market research by proxy backed up an acquisition strategy for the successes.
