One thing I didn't adequately see represented is the absolute need for versatility. There is no "typical work day" or no way to know what to expect from day to day. The essence of IT (and maybe moreseo IT consulting) is entrenched in the unknown (whether its a user claiming they know what the problem is and being so far off that it's hilarious, or a spontaneous explosion somewhere that requires immediate attention, etc etc), and without the ability to thrive in that unknown, you can't possibly handle this line of work.
