And check the stats on the number of CS grads who are working in the IT field by the time they're 40.
Heck, just make a basic observation of about every IT shop you vist, or work with.
I'm with you. I'm not "down" with those ideas, but I do sense there is a pretty widespread expectation that goes along those lines.
I certainly don't encourage kids to get in to computer work. Some are bound and determined, but I don't encourage it. I actually care about their ability to earn a living and not get sucked in to the oversupply of geeks, who generally are NOT well rounded people, that have the market flooded because specific interests who are want to manipulate the supply have sold the world on the concept of a great shortage of skilled labor.
