Very sad. I was taught using English in words, not ideas in pictures. I believe that English in words is more helpful, definitive and clear. Pictures require guesswork and imply a lack of understanding to any depth - probably good for Primary School level i.e. dumbed down. I too think that Microsoft has been pandering to the uneducated since introduction of the Ribbon and now continued with Metro. I see hierarchical menus as clearly structured and informative for location of required function, especially when supported by effective search mechanisms. The other mistake Microsoft is sadly making is not giving the Customer real choice. If the first screen asked whether I wanted a system based on (a) traditional menus, (b) picture based selections, or (c) both mixed, then I could choose and would then love my Supplier, but to be given a largely pre-specified product is totally the wrong way to go. When I buy my next OS I will definitely now look at the whole market as Microsoft is not giving me the options I seek.
